And now, two days after his birth at Portland Hospital in central London, Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry’s firstborn has made his global debut at Windsor Castle. During an intimate media call—just two photographers, one agency reporter, and three video cameras present—the Sussexes proudly shared a first look at their family of three.
As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex walked into St. George’s Hall, where they celebrated their wedding reception nearly one year ago, camera shutters clicked away to capture the newborn royal, wrapped in the G.H. Hurt & Son shawl traditionally worn by royal babies (Prince George, Prince Charlotte, and Prince Louis all wore similar pieces for their debuts). Chris Allerton, the couple’s wedding party photographer, was there to take photos, which were later shared to the @sussexroyal Instagram account.
After posing for photos, the Duchess got candid about the “magic” of motherhood, telling the cameras, “I have the two best guys in the world, and so I am really happy.” She noted her son has the “sweetest temperament.”
Prince Harry, his arms wrapped tightly around his son, looked on proudly. When asked who Baby Sussex looks like, he noted, “Everyone says babies change so much over two weeks, so we’re basically monitoring how this changing process happens over the next month, really. But his looks are changing every single day.” Meghan added that the family ran into the Duke of Edinburgh on their way to meet the cameras, but would soon be paying a visit to the queen.
And before the Sussexes headed off, the duchess took the time to thank everyone who sent their congratulations to the new family. “Thank you everybody, for all the well wishes and the kindness. It’s just meant to much.”
Duchess Meghan selected a Grace Wales Bonner trench dress, Manolo Blahnik pumps, and a gold-and-turquoise Jennifer Meyer necklace for the occasion. She also sported her engagement ring, which she did not wear during the final weeks of her pregnancy.
The family originally planned to pose on the steps behind Windsor Castle to echo the relaxed wedding photo taken before their wedding reception, but rain at Windsor meant the “wet weather scenario” went into place, with Harry, Meghan, and baby posing inside St. George’s Hall.
Communications secretary Sara Latham and deputy communications secretary Julie Burley were on site to help with the proceedings; Burley was spotted picking a few lint pieces off the hall carpet just before the couple arrived. The press was instructed they had 10 seconds for photos before three questions were asked, yet the duke and duchess seemed happy to stay and chat about their new son. In the end, the meeting went on for three minutes.
A source close to the couple tells BAZAAR.com, “This was a very special moment for the couple—one they won’t forget. The baby is the most peaceful, placid child you’ll ever meet. They are so proud but probably quite relieved to have gotten the photos out the way … They’re rather tired!”
Right after the shoot, the couple went straight over to introduce their son to the queen and tell her Baby Sussex’s name, which they later revealed as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor on Instagram. The name announcement came with a touching photo of Archie meeting his great-grandparents, with his parents and grandmother Doria Ragland looking on.
After that, it’s back to Frogmore Cottage, where Ragland has been on hand since April 16 and will spend the weekend—and Mother’s Day!—with the new family of three.
