Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Take the Stage at One Young World Summit amid Return to the U.K.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are back in the U.K.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared at the One Young World Summit in Manchester on Monday, their first joint working visit in England since stepping back from their senior royal roles in March 2020. After participating in a private round table on gender equality earlier in the day, Meghan and Harry were greeted with cheers as they stepped onto the stage. Meghan is set to deliver the keynote address at the event’s opening ceremony.

Meghan, 41, has been a One Young World Counsellor since 2014. In 2019, she attended the One Young World Opening Ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall and hosted a roundtable for gender equality activists at Windsor Castle, where Harry, 37, joined her.

During the opening remarks at The Bridgewater Hall this year, co-founder Kate Robertson told the delegates that the “innovation and positivity in this room” can “build the world that future generations deserve.” Onstage, she and the prince shared a hug.

Since launching in 2009, the One Young World community has grown to a network of over 13,700 ambassadors, and their projects have impacted 35.8 million people worldwide, according to the organization.

One Young World’s flagship event unites activists, humanitarians, world leaders, business executives, entrepreneurs, politicians and innovators to come together to confront the biggest challenges facing humanity.

The appearance kicks off a busy week for the couple, who relocated to Meghan’s home state of California in 2020 after stepping back from their roles as working members of the royal family. On Tuesday, they will travel to Germany for the Invictus Games’ “One Year to Go” countdown event. Meghan and Prince Harry will then head back to the U.K. to attend the WellChild Awards on Thursday.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex “are delighted to visit with several charities close to their hearts in early September,” a spokesperson for the couple said after announcing the trip in August.

Who Is Meghan?

The Association of Commonwealth Universities

Smart Works

Smart Works is a UK charity that provides high quality interview clothes and interview training to unemployed women in need. Women are referred to Smart Works from organisations such as job centres, work programmes, prisons, care homes, homeless shelters and mental health charities.

Mayhew
Since: January 2019
Funded entirely by public donations Mayhew aims to promote animal welfare by delivering a broad range of community-based veterinary, care and education services in the UK and overseas. By recognizing that animal welfare issues and social welfare issues are linked Mayhew works to protect the bond vulnerable people, the elderly, the homeless and those suffering from mental health issues have with their animals. And by taking their educational initiatives out to the community they have a better chance of helping prevent cases of neglect, abandonment and cruelty.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust

The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust exists to champion, fund and connect young leaders around the world who are driving positive social change, serving their communities and providing hope, work and self-employment opportunities for others. As Vice-President of the Trust Meghan will highlight the Trust’s partnerships with young people across the Commonwealth, and in particular its work supporting women and girls.

‘Together: Our Community Kitchen’ Cookbook
After working with the women of Hubb Community Kitchen The Duchess of Sussex suggested the idea of a charity cookbook that celebrates the power of cooking to bring people together. Supported by The Royal Foundation and published by Penguin Random House companies, ‘Together: Our Community Kitchen’ showcases over 50 recipes from women whose community was affected by the Grenfell Tower fire. Since the Together cookbook has been published, it has sold 130,000 copies worldwide. The resulting funds means the kitchen has been completely refurbished and is now open seven days a week

Smart Works Charity Capsule Collection
After working quietly with Smart Works for over a year The Duchess became aware of the difficulty of matching up the perfect work attire due to a range of mismatched colors and sizing. It was revealed in July 2019 that Marks & Spencer, John Lewis & Partners, Jigsaw, and designer Misha Nonoo would team up together to design a capsule collection of work wear clothing for the underprivileged women trying to secure employment. They will follow the “one-for-one model” model where an item from the collection purchased is an item donated to the Smart Works Charity.
