Meghan Markle Makes Surprise Solo Trip to N.Y.C. to Watch Pal Serena Williams in US Open Final

Meghan Markle is making a last-minute trip to New York City so she can support her good friend Serena Williams in the US Open final this weekend.

The Duchess of Sussex, 38, boarded a commercial flight from London on Friday morning, PEOPLE confirms. She is making the trip without husband Prince Harry and 4-month-old son Archie, who will remain home in Windsor.

Meghan is expected to return to Britain at the end of the weekend. “It is a last-minute trip,” a source told The Times, which broke the story of the royal’s plans. “Excited to support her friend, and then come back.”

The royal’s last trip to America was in February for her baby shower with close friends.

The news comes as it has emerged that Meghan, Harry and baby Archie will not be heading to Balmoral, Scotland, to spend time with Queen Elizabeth this season. Meghan has yet to visit the castle in the Scottish Highlands.

Meghan and Harry declined the invitation to spend time with the Queen, 93, and the royal family at Balmoral. A royal source says that the couple see Harry’s grandmother regularly as they live close to her at Windsor. They have also been busy planning their upcoming tour to Africa and preparing for the unveiling of Meghan’s capsule collection she has created with pal Misha Nonoo next week.

On Saturday, Meghan will be cheering on her close friend Williams at the final against Bianca Andreescu.

Meghan first met Williams at the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami where they immediately hit it off. Last summer, the tennis pro and her husband Alexis Ohanian, who both attended the royal wedding, joined Meghan to watch Harry compete in a polo match in Ascot, England. Williams also helped throw a baby shower for her friend in N.Y.C.earlier this year.

In July, Meghan and some friends watched Serena’s match at the Wimbledon championships. She then joined sister-in-law Kate Middleton for the women’s final.

Meghan Markle Makes a Surprise Appearance at a Photo Shoot and She Couldn’t Look Happier

Meghan Markle shared a glimpse of her highly-anticipated charity capsule collection of work-appropriate attire in two Instagram Story videos today.

The clips show the royal-turned-designer behind the scenes at a photo shoot promoting her range of work attire, which launches this autumn. In the footage, the duchess is seen hugging models, working with photographers, and smiling proudly from the sidelines.

“Meghan surprised everyone at Smart Works when she showed up for the shoot, ” which took place today in London, a source tells BAZAAR.com.

Following the theme of office-inspired fashion, Meghan wore a blue and white striped button-down shirt by Frank & Eileen, skinny jeans, and nude pumps for the shoot.

Duchess Meghan is collaborating with the brands Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Jigsaw, and Misha Nonoo for the collection. The initiative will support the charity Smart Works, one of her royal patronages, which helps women entering the workforce by helping them dress for jobs or prepare for interviews.

The pieces in Meghan’s capsule will sell on a “one-for-one” basis, meaning an item is donated for each item purchased. “Not only does this allow us to be part of each other’s story, it reminds us we are in it together,” the Duchess of Sussex explained in British Vogue in July, when she first unveiled the project.

Meghan Markle Is Launching a Collection of Workwear for a Good Cause

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is on a roll with her fashionable projects this week. Days after revealing that she guest edited the September issue of British Vogue, Meghan has announced that she’s launching a capsule collection of workwear to benefit her royal patronage Smart Works, a charity that benefits disadvantaged and unemployed women who are entering or returning to the workforce.

Meghan broke the news in her British Vogue issue, according to royal reporter Omid Scobie. She recruited an impressive set of collaborators for the project: British department stores Marks & Spencer and John Lewis, the brand Jigsaw, and her close friend and fashion designer Misha Nonoo.

The collection will launch later this year and will be sold on a “one-for-one basis,” meaning an item is donated for each item purchased. “Not only does this allow us to be part of each other’s story, it reminds us we are in it together,” Meghan explained in the magazine.

The duchess became the royal patron of Smart Works in January and had a public engagement at the headquarters that month. During her visit, she helped style one woman for a job interview.

Meghan said during her trip, “It’s not just donating your clothes and seeing where they land, it’s really being part of each other’s success stories as women.”

Smart Works has grown quickly ever since Duchess Meghan became involved. In February, the organization helped 187 women in London, which is almost 50 percent more than it assisted in the same month last year. Considering the ever-persistent “Meghan effect,” the phenomenon of an article of clothing selling out after the duchess wears it in public, we can only imagine the impact her upcoming collection will have on Smart Works.

HRH The Duchess of Sussex Interviews Michelle Obama In The September Issue

In formulating the content of the Forces for Change issue, I knew that I wanted to create a magazine that would speak not just to where we are, but to where we hope to be. In doing so, I knew we needed to both open and close strong. Like a beautiful meal: the first bite sets the tone and the final spoonful leaves you satiated, smiling, and sometimes (if you’re dining under the direction of a forward-thinking chef) even inspired. So how could I bring this issue to its logical conclusion? How could I meet that very lofty self-imposed goal?

Turns out British Vogue famously has a back page Q&A feature that is equal parts informative and whimsical, with a special guest each month. My first thought was that it needed to be someone kind, inspirational, motivating, funny, with gravitas and as much depth as levity. My second thought: it needed to be Michelle Obama.

So, over a casual lunch of chicken tacos and my ever-burgeoning bump, I asked Michelle if she would help me with this secret project.

It wasn’t a huge ask, so to speak, because the back page of Vogue comprises a few simple questions to garner a few simple answers – tidbits that would leave you, the reader, feeling all of the aforementioned sensations of this analogous culinary experience. She graciously said yes (because she’s Michelle, she’s gracious), and then very promptly sent answers (because she’s Michelle, she’s prompt).

HRH The Duchess of Sussex Introduces The September Issue In Her Own Words

It was in early January, on a cold and blustery London day, that I sat down for a cup of tea with British Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Edward Enninful. Though we have several mutual friends, our first encounter had been years in the making, the impetus for which was my asking him to support an organisation I strongly believe in called Smart Works.

What evolved over the next hour was a promising pow wow of two like-minded thinkers, who have much in common, including our love of writing. Over a steaming cup of mint tea, we teased through how one can shine light in a world filled with seemingly daily darkness. Lofty? Of course. Worth it? Without question.

Within hours of our meeting’s end, we were already texting one another – philosophising about how to communicate this shared understanding and the lens through which we see the world, how to pivot from a perspective of frustration to one of optimism.

So I asked the question. Actually, I typed and deleted the question several times until I built up the courage to ask the question in question.

“Edward… instead of doing the cover, would you be open to me guest editing your September issue?”

(Mind you, I know how important the September issue is for the fashion industry. I realise the reach, and I see the opportunity to be a part of fashion’s push for something greater, kinder, more impactful. But I am also a little nervous to be boldly asking the editor-in-chief, whom I’d only just met, to take a chance on me.) Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Will Christen Baby Archie in a Completely Private Ceremony

On Saturday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will christen their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in a service at the private chapel at Windsor Castle. Palace sources say that the ceremony will be “small and intimate” and that at least one official family photograph will be released after the baptism.

Sources close to the new parents say they have chosen not to have media attend the event because they intend to raise their son as a private citizen. Though Harry was baptized at St. George’s Chapel and the couple were married there, holding the ceremony in the Windsor Castle chapel will ensure absolute privacy.

“It’s a case of starting as they mean to go on and laying down markers,” explains a source. “They want Archie to have an ordinary childhood and they plan to shield him from too much media exposure.” Harry particularly is said to want his son to grow up away from the media spotlight.

There will be around 25 guests, including the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are not expected to attend, however Prince William, Duchess Catherine, and Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland will be present, along with the couple’s chosen godparents.

The decision to make the baptism private is another example of the couple forging their own path. Traditionally royal christenings have been public affairs. Before the beginning of hospital photo calls after the birth, it was the public’s first chance to see royal babies. The Cambridges had media facilities in place for the christenings of all their children, and while the service has always been private, the arrivals at the church were filmed. In the case of Princess Charlotte, who was christened at St. Mary Magdalene church in Sandringham, well-wishers were invited into the surrounding area to see the family and their new baby as they entered.

Harry and Meghan have been more protective of Archie, who has only been seen once and never in public. They allowed a small media pool to photograph, film, and interview them inside Windsor Castle two days after Archie’s birth. Meghan did not want to pose for the traditional photo call outside of the hospital and instead they arranged a more intimate photo call with the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh and Meghan’s mother. Since then, they released two pictures of Archie on Instagram to celebrate Mother’s Day in the US and Father’s Day.

Harry and Meghan are likely to come in for criticism for breaking the mold. Royal writer Penny Junor told the Sunday Times said the couple were making a mistake. “They can’t have it both ways. Either they are totally private, pay for their own house and disappear out of view or play the game the way it is played. Seeing Archie and his godparents arriving at the christening is what people are interested in; it isn’t baring your baby’s soul, just giving the public who love and support them a crumb to enjoy. If they want it to be really private, hold it in a parish church, not St George’s Chapel where royal ceremonies are held.”

Their decision to keep Archie’s baptism private comes just days after the publication of the Royal Family’s expenditure, which revealed that British taxpayers contributed £2.4m towards the renovation of their new home, Frogmore Cottage.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Announce Official Africa Tour This Fall — with Baby Archie!

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are heading to Africa — this time as a family of three!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed on Thursday that they will carry out a royal tour in Africa this fall. In a post on their @SussexRoyal Instagram page, they also hinted that son Archie, born on May 6, will be coming along: “This will be their first official tour as a family!”

They will visit the country of South Africa, with Prince Harry also making stops in Malawi and Angola. He’ll also do a “short working visit in Botswana on route to the other countries,” according to the Instagram post.

“The Duke and Duchess are really looking forward to meeting so many of you on the ground and continuing to raise awareness of the high impact work local communities are doing across the commonwealth and beyond,” the couple wrote on Instagram.

While visiting Malawi, Harry plans to work on expanding the reach of Prince Harry’s Sentebale charity, which he co-founded in 2006 with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, to support young people affected by HIV and AIDS in Lesotho, Botswana and Malawi.

Princess Diana visited and famously walked through an active landmine area in Angola during a 1997 visit. The photo of Harry and Prince William‘s mother featured the princess wearing a visor and protective gear provided by charity the HALO Trust while walking through the mine area, becoming an iconic image and example of her passion for the cause.

Home to some of the world’s most important remaining wilderness, the presence of landmines in Angola continue to make the African country unsafe for local and animal inhabitants. During the Chatham House event, the prince will listen to the ‘Connecting Conservation, Sustainable Development and Mine Action’ panel conversation, as well as words by the Angolan Minister for the Environment, Hon Paula Coelho, before making his own remarks.

Harry first visited the Cuando Cubango region in southeast Angola with the HALO Trust in 2013. From this trip, Harry was able to witness the first-hand the impact of landmines affecting the civil war-torn areas.

Africa holds a special place in Prince Harry‘s heart, and he has visited the continent on many occasions beginning as a young boy. His Sentebale charity was founded in 2006 with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to support young people affected by HIV and AIDS in Lesotho, Botswana and Malawi, and Harry has taken part in animal conservation work.

In addition, Meghan and Prince Harry have traveled to Africa together several times. They visited Botswana early in their relationship in the summer of 2016 and again to celebrate Meghan’s 36th birthday in 2017.

“I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana. We camped out with each other under the stars. She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic,” Harry said after their engagement. “So then we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to know each other.”

They shared a never-before-seen photo of their 2017 trip on their new Instagram account, which showed them assisting with conversation efforts with elephants.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Officially Split From Their Joint Charity with Prince William and Kate Middleton

Prince Harry and Meghan are leaving the Royal Foundation that they currently share with Prince William and Kate and will set up their own charitable foundation later this year, it has been announced. Kensington Palace announced the split today, but said that the couples will continue to work together on key projects such as their mental health campaign Heads Together.

The move comes following the announcement in March that the Sussexes will set up their own household with a new team. It also comes amid suggestions that the two couples have not been getting along, but palace aides said today that the decision about the Foundation was taken with the couples “divergent paths” in mind and was designed to be “future proof” for decades. Aides also pointed to the fact that the Cambridges path as future King and Queen is more restricted and the Sussexes have more freedom to pursue different types of charity projects.

“Later this year The Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge,” reads a statement from Kensington Palace. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish their own new charitable foundation with transitional operating support from The Royal Foundation.”

A spokesman described the changes as “designed to best complement the work and responsibilities of Their Royal Highnesses as they prepare for their future roles, and to better align their charitable activity with their new households.”

Both William and Harry attended a meeting of the Foundation trustees at Kensington Palace yesterday where they arrived together and spoke with trustees about the changes. “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are incredibly proud of what they have achieved together through the Royal Foundation,” says a spokesman. “They are especially proud to have established a charity that has had, and will continue to have, significant long-lasting impact, changing lives for the better.”

The decision, described as a “collective decision,” is the conclusion of a months-long review which began following the announcement that the Sussexes would establish their own household. The current Foundation will be known as The Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and will continue to house joint initiatives such as Heads Together.

Aides said that any projects solely associated with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the funds allocated to them would likely become part of the new Foundation, but details on individual projects have yet to be decided. Aides stressed that the couples’ commitment to their charities was “absolutely paramount.”

As part of the changes, it is understood that a small number of posts are being put at risk of redundancy.

The Foundation was created in 2009 as an umbrella organization for William and Harry’s charitable endeavors. Kate became the third patron after marrying William in 2011 and Meghan joined as the fourth patron after her marriage to Harry last year.

Ahead of the Sussex’s wedding, in February of 2018, the foursome took park in a joint charity forum where they spoke about their charitable focusses and the work of the Foundation under the theme ‘Making a Difference Together.’

The Foundation has played host to several successful initiatives, most notably the young royals’ mental health campaign Heads Together. It has given out grants including £2 million in October 2017 towards backing digital solutions for mental health. The organization also created the Endeavour Fund, which supports wounded, injured or sick service personnel to use sport and adventure as part of their recovery. Additionally, Meghan’s cookbook to raise money for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, which has sold 130,000 copies worldwide, was supported by the Foundation.

Inside Meghan Markle’s Peaceful Life as a New Mom With Prince Harry and Baby Archie

The Duchess Of Sussex made her first public appearance at Trooping the Colour on Saturday, after revealing Baby Archie to the world a little more than a month ago. Meghan Markle dressed in a navy ensemble, her dress by Claire Waight Keller of Givenchy, her wedding designer, and her hat by Noel Stewart. She accompanied her husband Prince Harry and shared a carriage with Kate, the Duchess Of Cambridge in Alexander McQueen and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. Both Kate and Meghan paying homage to their wedding dress designers by wearing looks by them.

Although Meghan was on maternity leave, a royal source told ELLE.com that “the Queen’s birthday celebration is a family event with the wider members of the royal family all in attendance.”

Meghan, who takes her Royal duties very seriously, has always been conscious of tradition, according to friends, and wanted to honor the Queen at the annual birthday parade.

“This is similar to the Duchess of Cambridge’s maternity leave where she made a few appearances at family and personal events (Trooping the Couple and Wimbledon) but did not carry out any official duties as a member of the Royal Family during maternity leave,” a Royal source shared. The Duchess Of Sussex did not participate in the recent U.S. State visit.

Archie did not attend Trooping the Colour, but that wasn’t too surprising. William and Kate’s children did not attend Trooping the Colour until they were a bit older. Prince Louis made his first appearance this year as a toddler, just after his first birthday, as did Charlotte at the same age. It is unclear if Meghan and Harry brought Archie to Buckingham Palace while celebrating the Queen’s Birthday.
What Meghan’s Life Is Like Day-to-Day

With Baby Archie now a month old, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been nesting and enjoying the first month as parents. Prince Harry is sharing the parenting duties with Meghan Markle, and the Sussexes have settled into a routine with their newborn.

Meghan is breastfeeding, and Harry is changing diapers. Both are bonding with the newest addition to the family. Harry wants to be as “involved as possible,” so like every parent, he is feeling the effects of the sleepless nights. He’s exhausted, but “enjoying every minute of it.”

One family member shared, “[Archie] is the cutest little thing I’ve ever seen. They couldn’t be happier.”

The new parents are also enjoying lovely long walks within the Frogmore Cottage grounds with Baby Archie. The couple love the privacy their Windsor home affords them. It’s everything they hoped and, according to a trusted confidant, is “providing the family with so much happiness! It is quiet and out of the hustle and bustle of London. For them all to be able to walk freely and enjoy the beautiful area is such a sensational treat!” Continue reading Inside Meghan Markle’s Peaceful Life as a New Mom With Prince Harry and Baby Archie

One Year After Their Wedding, Harry and Meghan Are Making Good on Their Promise to Modernize the Monarchy

Somehow—where does the time go?—it’s been a year since we all woke up at an ungodly hour (in the U.S.) on Saturday, May 19, to watch a British prince marry an American actress, as everyone from the Queen to Serena Williams watched on. It was fun! It is not your everyday event that draws the likes of Amal Clooney, Oprah, and Kate Middleton, many of them wearing some sort of fancy, dramatic hat.

The attention devoted to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, has now continued into a year’s worth of near-constant media coverage. So much has happened for them in the past year that Lifetime felt it necessary to put out a second movie about their relationship, exploring what the couple has been through since the last Lifetime movie about them that came out last May.

In their 12 months as a royal couple, Meghan and Harry have forged a significantly different path from their royal relatives, and also proven how insanely, absurdly good they are at doing it. When Meghan—a biracial American with a penchant for activism and charity work—joined the family, she was hailed as a modern breath of fresh air for the British royals. One year in, she and Harry have both repeatedly made good on that promise.

Meghan wasted no time after the wedding in getting together her first full-scale passion project, in her new royal capacity, and it was one that felt wholly like her own creation. She spent time with the women at the Hubb Community Kitchen, and put out a charity cookbook in the fall that raised money for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire. She enlisted her A-list friends to help her spread the word, and the book was immediately a bestseller. The project related to her well-established love of cooking, but also connected to a pressing fundraising need; it managed to be innovative, effective, and buzzy all at once.

It took a bit of time, but the Sussexes eventually set themselves apart on social media, as well. One of the slightly bittersweet aspects of Meghan marrying into the royal family was that she had to give up her Instagram account, as well as her lifestyle blog, The Tig, that clearly were passions of hers. But, just a few weeks before son Archie’s arrival, the palace announced that Meghan and Harry would be starting their own account, separate from the other royals. Suddenly Meghan herself seemed to be weighing in on a near-daily basis, and in the intimate-feeling sphere of social media: her American-isms and specific verbiage choices, the poems and photographs and quotes, the carefully selected imagery—it all feels like the way she would want the account to be run, even if she hasn’t formally come forward as the sole author of @sussexroyal. In just a few weeks, the Sussexes are already set to outpace the Cambridges’ @kensingtonroyal account in terms of follower count (not that it’s a competition!). Inside Duchess Meghan & Prince Harry’s Intimate Photo Shoot with Baby Sussex

Before the world had seen his face or knew his name, Baby Sussex quickly became the most famous newborn on the planet. The son of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, and the first biracial baby born into the Windsor family, had quite the welcome party in Windsor after his arrival on May 6, with well-wishers filling the town’s streets and the world’s press camped out in eager anticipation of details about the newest member of the royal family.

And now, two days after his birth at Portland Hospital in central London, Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry’s firstborn has made his global debut at Windsor Castle. During an intimate media call—just two photographers, one agency reporter, and three video cameras present—the Sussexes proudly shared a first look at their family of three.

As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex walked into St. George’s Hall, where they celebrated their wedding reception nearly one year ago, camera shutters clicked away to capture the newborn royal, wrapped in the G.H. Hurt & Son shawl traditionally worn by royal babies (Prince George, Prince Charlotte, and Prince Louis all wore similar pieces for their debuts). Chris Allerton, the couple’s wedding party photographer, was there to take photos, which were later shared to the @sussexroyal Instagram account. The Duke And Duchess Introduce Their Son Archie

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped out with their newborn son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor at St. George’s Hall in Windsor Castle (where they had their royal wedding reception!) on Wednesday, two days after welcoming the new addition to the royal family. Wearing a white sleeveless dress by London-based British designer Grace Wales Bonner, Meghan was glowing as she stood beside Harry, who held their newborn son in his arms.

Asked what it’s like being a new mom, Meghan said: “It’s magic. It’s pretty amazing. I have the best two guys in the world, so I’m really happy.” She went on to say that Baby Sussex “has the sweetest temperament. He’s really calm.” Harry then added, “I don’t know where he gets that from!”
“He’s just been a dream,” Meghan said. “It’s been a special couple of days.”

When asked whether the baby takes after anyone, Meghan said: “We’re still trying to figure that out.” Harry added: “Everyone says babies change so much over two weeks. We’re basically monitoring how the changing process happens over this next month, really. His looks are changing every single day, so who knows?”

When asked about parenting, Harry said: “It’s great. Parenting is amazing. It’s only been two and a half days, but we’re just so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy. Harry said they were looking forward to spending some “precious times with him as he slowly, slowly starts to grow up.”

Duchess Meghan Comfortable and Content as Baby Sussex Wait Continues

As the excitement (and hysteria!) for the arrival of Baby Sussex continues to build in the town of Windsor, all is calm over at Frogmore Cottage.

Sources tell BAZAAR.com that despite being past her due date, Duchess Meghan is taking pregnancy overtime in stride. “Comfortable and content,” says a friend of the mom-to-be. “She’s got this.”

With mother Doria Ragland and husband Prince Harry by her side, the source adds the three are virtually unaware of the growing media presence in Windsor. “They’re in their own bubble at the moment,” the pal adds. “Meg is with the most important people in her life … she’s calm.”

Earlier today Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Duke of Sussex has postponed his May 8 trip to Amsterdam, cutting his two-day Netherlands visit down to one. He will now fly to The Hague and back on Thursday to launch a one-year countdown to the 2020 Invictus Games.

While suggestions have been made that the date was postponed due to Baby Sussex’s late arrival, palace aides explain the cancellation is simply to prevent “logistical conflicts” for press covering Prince Charles and Camilla’s diplomatic trip to Germany from May 7 to 10. Charles’s four-day visit is not only important to the future monarch but also for Britain’s Foreign Office, as the U.K. works to secure its exit from the European Union. One of the couple’s appointments includes a private meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

There is, of course, a chance that Harry may not travel at all. While he has every intention of flying out to the Netherlands on May 9, a palace source says he would most likely stay in the U.K. if Meghan is in labor or their baby has just arrived. “It’s a unique situation, but he’s doing his best to make it work,” says the source.
