Why Meghan Markle Could Become the Next Princess Diana

There’s something a little bit different about the British royal family nowadays. Sure, 2018 is going to bring us some extra family members: Prince George and Princess Charlotte will be getting a new sibling and we have a wedding to look forward to. But with Meghan Markle in the mix, it feels like we may also be gaining a new People’s Princess.

Meghan Markle’s influence has jokingly been referred to as the “Markle Sparkle,” a phrase that seems particularly fitting considering her glamourous past. But as we edge closer to her May wedding date, it’s becoming clear she’s having a much bigger impact on the House of Windsor than any of us could have possibly predicted.

It’s been less than three months since Prince Harry got down on one knee and yet already his bride-to-be is winning over public hearts and evoking memories of another former Kensington Palace resident, Harry’s mom, Princess Diana. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Wedding details

It’s going to be another fairy-tale royal wedding when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot on May 19.

The newlyweds will ride in a horse-carriage through the streets of Windsor after exchanging their vows at St. George’s Chapel, palace officials confirmed on Sunday. At the 2011 royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the carriage ride through London was one of the day’s most romantic highlights.

Also on Sunday, the palace shared exactly when royals fans will need to set their alarms for the big day. The service will begin at 12 p.m. U.K. time, or 7 a.m. EST/4 a.m. PST. The carriage procession will depart an hour later, at 8 a.m. EST/5 a.m. PST.

With fewer than 100 days until the couple say “I do,” officials shared a new round of details, including confirmation that the couple will be married by the Archbishop of Canterbury The Most Revd. and Rt Hon. Justin Welby. He will conduct the marriage ceremony, but the full service at the chapel will be led by The Rt Revd. David Conner, the Dean of Windsor.

After the wedding, the couple will parade through the streets — leaving Windsor Castle via Castle Hill and preceding along the High Street through Windsor Town before returning to the castle along the Long Walk.

“They hope this short journey will provide an opportunity for more people to come together around Windsor and to enjoy the atmosphere of this special day,” said the statement from Kensington Palace.

The palace will not say whether invitations have already sent or comment on the number of people who will be expected at St. George’s Chapel on the big day. (It can hold around 800 guests.) Those who land one of the golden tickets will be invited to a reception at St. George’s Hall, one of the luxurious state rooms inside the castle. The couple will then join the reception after returning from the carriage procession.

After a break in the late afternoon, there will be a private evening reception given by Harry’s father, Prince Charles. No word yet on whether that reception will be held inside the state apartments or at another venue within the Windsor estate, such as Frogmore House – where the couple’s romantic engagement photos were taken.

Meghan Markle could replace KATE: Harry’s fiancee has Brexit test at Commonwealth event

Meghan Markle will face her toughest royal test yet when the Queen hosts the biggest gathering of heads of state ever to be held in the UK during a Commonwealth summit – and Meghan and Prince Harry are poised to take on roles usually reserved for Prince William and Kate.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, known as CHOGM, takes place in London in April and will have added significance this year because of Brexit.

The Government is hoping to use the summit of 52 Commonwealth countries, which is being held at venues including Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, as a platform to kick-start free trade talks with non EU countries in preparation for Britain’s exit from the bloc on March 29, 2019.

The Royal Family will be central to the week-long event, with the Queen, Prince Charles, Camilla and younger royals including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry all expected to take part.

Meghan, 36, expressed a desire to find out more about the Commonwealth during an interview with Harry following their engagement last November. It is thought she will accompany Harry, 33, on a number of appointments – with speculation the couple may even need to step in for William and Kate because their third baby is due around the time of the conference, which starts on April 16.

How Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Rewriting the Royal Rules

As 2017 wraps up, the changing of the guard is clear in royal circles as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle toss out the traditional play book. With the release of three stunning new photos on Dec. 21 that look more like Hollywood movie stills than official palace portraits, the engaged couple demonstrated yet again that they are writing their own rules. Harry, a source tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story, is “cock-a-hoop” at the prospect of their life together. (Translation: Deliriously happy.)

As they plan their May 19 wedding, Harry, 33, and Meghan, 36, are “leading the planning process for all aspects,” their spokesman says — with their own unique touch.

The pair are set to wed at St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle with the blessing of Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. That would have been unthinkable in the past: Elizabeth’s uncle, Edward VIII, abdicated the throne to marry the twice-divorced Wallis Simpson. (Like Simpson, Markle is also American and divorced.)

“We are a very much multi-cultural, multi-colored, multi-faith society these days,” says Penny Junor, Harry’s biographer. “Lots of people in Britain were born in other countries and having a royal family reflect that is very helpful. The fact that she is mixed race, a divorcée, a career woman and not a member of the British aristocracy is all very positive for the future of the monarchy, and for it to be seen to be relevant to society today.”

Palace courtiers who have met Meghan (including at the annual staff party at Windsor Castle) note she has lots of new ideas. “She is smart and well-liked,” one staffer tells PEOPLE.

On Christmas Day, the couple delighted the crowds outside church. (And Meghan even proved a pro with her first curtsy before the Queen!)

Early in the new year, the couple will continue planning for their big day, including Meghan’s baptism into the Church of England. Earlier this month, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said the couple has a “profound sense of commitment” about their life together.
